Papo & Yo is an adventure puzzle with a platforming focus. Indie studio Minority Media developed the game. After the development of Papo & Yo studio has concentrated on developing VR games. It is the only installment in the IP.
The plot revolves around the boy called Quico who is living in the Brazilian suburbs, and his father addicted to alcohol. As told by Vander Caballero — lead game designer, the game represents his experience with his alcoholic father. The ability to open tears to another dimension is like this a particular kind of representing escapism.
The game features platforming sections, and the ability to turn the real world into the magical one is introduced: tools brought out from the latter may aid the protagonist in their quest. The whole magical setting is very much like going into another dimension for the stuff needed. The Monster is also a crucial part of the gameplay — he helps Quico to hop around the gaps. The behemoth can also turn berserk: if he eats too many frogs, he starts crushing everything on its way. It can be calmed down with fruits.
Papo & Yo is an adventure video game developed and published by Minority Media for the PlayStation 3. It was originally released on August 14, 2012 on the PlayStation Network and since April 18, 2013 on Microsoft Windows through Steam. It was released on January 7, 2014 on OS X and Linux through the Humble Indie Bundle X, and on July 1, 2015 via Steam. The game involves a young South-American boy Quico who, while hiding from his abusive, alcoholic father, finds himself taken to a dream-like favela, and meeting a normally docile creature, Monster. The player, as Quico, can interact with Monster and manipulate the buildings of the favela in unique ways, such as by stacking individual shacks on each other, to complete puzzles and progress in the game. Papo & Yo was designed by Vander Caballero, who created the story based on his own past in dealing with an abusive, alcoholic father.
